        TEMA CELESTE EDITIONS DEBUTS
WITH BOOK AND LIMITED EDITION WORK
        BY ANDREA ZITTEL

Andrea Zittel's book and limited-edition work mark the debut of tema celeste editions:
an innovative series of monographs, simply titled diary, in which contemporary artists
use the model of a personal diary to interweave tales and conversation about their
artistic practice. The reader is allowed to voyage through the thoughts and sensi-
bilities of each artist, experiencing an original way of looking at their work. To cele-
brate the publication of each diary, the artist also creates a limited edition work.

In diary #01 Zittel, who was born and raised in Southern California, recounts her
journey, both actual and intellectual, through the desert of her native region in search
of experimental habitable systems. The tale unfolds with photographs shot by the
artist at the most fascinating and expressive sites in the California desert, alternating
with spreads of Zittel's work, from the creation of a cement island in the Scandinavian
sea, over two years in the making, to her experiments with food and the places and
ways in which might be prepared. In the volume's final section, a conversation be-
tween Zittel and her friend and fellow artist Allan McCollum draws out the funda-
      mental themes of her career.

To celebrate the publication of diary #01, Andrea Zittel has created a limited edition
work titled A-Z 2002 Homestead Unit, a scale model of one of her life-size habitations.
»The original pioneering spirit considered autonomy and self-sufficiency as prere-
quisites of personal freedom. At A-Z West, we are investigating how such percep-
tions of freedom have been re-adapted for contemporary living,« says the artist.
tema celeste editions is an initiative of Gabrius (http://www.gabrius.com), the art
multimedia group specializing in providing products and services to the world of art
and finance, which issues the contemporary art magazine tema celeste.

The diary series is conceived and edited by tema celeste 's editor-in-chief, Simona
Vendrame, while the limited edition works are conceived and produced by Michael
      Steinberg.
